The New Orleans Pelicans will kick off their 2017-18 preseason schedule against the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday evening. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7 pm Central inside the Smoothie King Center.

Earlier on Monday, head coach Alvin Gentry reassured the media that Anthony Davis will play against the Bulls. In case you missed it, Davis was forced to leave Saturday’s open practice early with a right shoulder issue, but at the time it was never believed to be anything serious

Tech and ULM represent the LSWA POW http://www.sportstalk977.com/sports/3562/ http://www.sportstalk977.com/sports/3562/#respond Tue, 03 Oct 2017 17:21:52 +0000 http://www.sportstalk977.com/?p=3562 ...Read More]]> A running back from McNeese, a safety from Louisiana Tech and a kickoff returner from ULM earned the votes of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association panel to earn Monday’s LSWA state college football player of the week honors.

Running back David Hamm of McNeese won a very close vote for offensive player after rushing for 164 yards in a 35-0 win at SFA. Cooper had a career night with two interceptions in Tech’s 34-16 win over South Alabama for defensive honors, and Green of ULM earned special teams honors in the Warhawks 51-43 win over Coastal Carolina after returning a kick 82 yards for a touchdown.

DEFENSE

SECDRICK COOPER – LOUISIANA TECH — Senior, S

Louisiana Tech senior safety Secdrick Cooper enjoyed a career night to help lead the Bulldogs to a 34-16 win over South Alabama. The LA Tech defense registered two interceptions, both by Cooper which were the first two interceptions of his career. Cooper snagged his first career interception after taking advantage of an overthrow by the South Alabama quarterback late in the first quarter. Then, a corner blitz and forced the South Alabama to throw the ball early which allowed Secdrick Cooper to come up with his second interception as the Jaguars were inside the red zone. Cooper has led a Bulldog defense that has allowed an average of just 18.3 points per game in the last three games.

SPECIAL TEAMS

MARCUS GREEN – ULM

Marcus Green returned three kickoffs for 115 yards (38.3 avg.), including an 82-yard run back for a touchdown, in ULM’s 51-43 win over Coastal Carolina. It marked ULM’s first kickoff return for a TD since Courtney Davis returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a score against Grambling State in 2013. Green compiled 127 combined kick return yards (punts and kickoffs) vs. CCU and accounting for 181 all-purpose yards.

With a smothering defense that made timely plays and an offense that dominated time of possession, the New Orleans Saintsbeat the Miami Dolphins, 20-0, Sunday at Wembley Stadium.

It was the first Saints’ first shutout since Dec. 16, 2012 when they beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 41-0.

New Orleans improved to 2-0 all-time in the NFL’s International Series in London, but, more importantly, the Saints bounced back to 2-2 before next week’s bye. By allowing just 185 yards and no points, New Orleans will significantly improve its ranking in the league after two lousy defensive efforts to open the year.

Trojans SHOCK LSU http://www.sportstalk977.com/sports/trojans-shock-lsu/ http://www.sportstalk977.com/sports/trojans-shock-lsu/#respond Mon, 02 Oct 2017 16:01:11 +0000 http://www.sportstalk977.com/?p=3557 ...Read More]]>

Troy quarterback Brandon Silvers basked in the scene of teammates cupping their hands around their ears to better hear the triumphant howls of several hundred traveling fans in a mostly empty, 102,000-seat Tiger Stadium.

Silvers was in the stands the last time Troy visited Death Valley in 2008, when LSU overcame a 31-3 second-half hole for the largest comeback in Tigers history. Memories of that game provided Silvers with particular satisfaction in being part of another Trojans squad that also took an early lead – and held on this time.

Jordan Chunn ran for 191 yards and a touchdown, Troy forced four turnovers and the surging Trojans upset the 25th-ranked Tigers 24-21 on Saturday night.

Troy (4-1) became the first team from outside the Southeastern Conference to win at Death Valley since UAB in 2000. They snapped the Tigers’ streak of 49 straight home victories over non-league opponents.

ULM running back Ben Luckett made the most of his opportunities on Saturday night with 127 yards on seven carries in a 51-43 win over Coastal Carolina. The sturdy junior from Palestine, Texas, did his best runaway train impression with two explosive runs of more than 50 yards.

“It’s a great feeling man,” Luckett told media members after the game. “I just have to continue to work. I know it’s a bunch of backs. When my number did get called, I knew I had to be productive with it, so I can be in the rotation.”

Entering the fray in relief of starter Derrick Gore, Luckett reintroduced himself to Warhawk Nation with a 53-yard run to Coastal’s 17 on the final play of the first quarter. Six plays later, and after catching his breath, he trotted back out to pound in a 1-yard score.

ULM’s first series in the third quarter, Luckett again spelled Gore and answered the call with a 56-yard sprint to the end zone that put the Warhawks ahead 38-22.
